Fahamu uses information and communication technologies to serve the needs of organisations and social movements that aspire to progressive social change and that promote and protect human rights. Fahamu believes that civil society organisations have a critical role to play in defending human rights (the word fahamu means ˜understanding or consciousness in Kiswahili). Fahamu's core work is the strengthening of the campaigning, advocacy and organisational capacity of civil society organisations to protect human rights and promote human dignity.

Established in 1997 as a not-for-profit organization, Fahamu has played a pioneering role in using the new information and communication technologies to support capacity building and networking between civil society and human rights organizations. Fahamu SA was established in 2002 in Durban South Africa as a separate registered Trust under South Africa law.

Fahamu has been building the capacity of human rights and civil society organisations in the SADC region to uphold rule of law through strengthening their campaigning, advocacy and organisational capacity. Fahamu produces a range of distance learning materials and a range of electronic newsletters for civil society organisations in Africa, including a weekly newsletter on social justice in Africa, Pambazuka News, reaching an estimated readership of more than 500,000 people.

The organization has offices in Dakar, South Africa, Kenya and Oxford, UK.
