[edit] Structure
[edit] issues to addresss
- most useful - security, budgetting and _enabling participation_ (expose more) "build toolkit around that structure and see if there are more case studies that refer to this" THis will include making more reference in the introduction BF
- add - keyword search/tagging "check that this comes with the NIAB structure" AS
- give greater prominence in the overall toolkit structure for the section on “What Type of Tools are available” http://wiki.mobiles.tacticaltech.org/index.php/What_types_of_tool_are_available%3F BF
- MAKE links/referrences to - directory of mobile service providers in different countries. and to a map of where services such as GPRS, EDGE and others are available for various countries. "BF to source - remembering that people might not be so savvy about searching internet"
- consider including a section of current/pervious user comments/experiences to help future users. For version 2 - implement comments later. Fahamu might have money for this as part of their PAMONET support
- Map is good - improve it! Improve it and make it clickable - in HTML MT
[edit] issues to add to the introduction 'BF
- mention missed calls in the introduction '
- paradox - most common use is voice calls which is the most accessible
- data costs are coming down so more and more people are using phones to access internet on the move
- cheaper chinese models
- make sure we say that: What will you need - The costs related to computer based tools included laptops, non-symbian OS mobile phone, bulk SMS credit and internet connection costs while phone based tools required a smart phone, Symbian OS based mobile phone, data-capable SIM cards, data-cables, airtime/credit, face-to-face interview sessions and overall. You might need certain services ( issue about GPRS coverage) that aren't available yet in your country but the environment is changing rapidly
- If you have a large consituency and a basic mobile phone you are limited to these activities
- if you want to do decent multimedia you'll need this spec of phone
[edit] Glossary
- check and improve glossary
- check all terms are linked to glossary Someone working on editorial (BS and MT - check implementation so it looks good)
[edit] Scenarios
- use a link for the introduction under “enabling participation” and “fundraising” instead of repeating the text BF
- add some step by step - needed - step by step How to transmit material from mobile phone to a website such as using Shozu for posting material to YouTube, CNN, BBC and Facebook - divide up into social networking sites, Broadcasters, blogs, content sharing sites such as facebook and youtube and add to peoples media. Also add the fact that file sharing is really popular via bluetooth phones - people are downloading
- review the scenarios so that they do not overlap.
- Action Allerts - is part of Coordinating and Mobilising - The scenario on coordination and that on action alerts seem to have an overlap. merge! BF
- add missed calls to coordinating and etc A missed call (beeping) is practically an accepted form of communication in Uganda, especially when a pre-arranged activity/event happens. For example, I’ll beep you when I’m free and we can meet at place X. It’s also used to indicate that I’d like to speak to you, but I haven’t got enough credit/airtime for the conversation, can you call me back? BF
- We need to add a section to each scenario "issues and problems" or common problems faced and basic troubleshooting suggestions between scenarios and also tools - skip the specifics talk about broad brushstrokes. BF and MT to read all scenarios and come up with issues and then get feedback on this
- (Fundraising) The example on “Sponsored Handsets” was unclear in that the text does not seem to clearly communicate the intended message. Also add section on how to secure transactions. Ask Geoffrey about secure transactions - MT
- enabling participation - add section on issues such as how to solicit numbers - 'mention data protection laws in the security section and link in from here. how to ensure that people can opt out from SMS services BF
- add undertitles - eg - peoples media - this is Using mobile phones to create and distribute content etc etc...BF
[edit] Tools
- Make http://wiki.mobiles.tacticaltech.org/index.php/What_types_of_tool_are_available%3F the gateway to the tools
- link to individual tools, add communications tools (Fring, Gizmo)
- Add PBX/ VOIP tools as a separate 'advanced section - flag the level of knowledge needed and that they are worth watching
- Information of what software is not compatible. For example, the tool didn’t specify that smart phones with windows mobile or symbian are not compatible. However, we found this out after buying the equipment.
- possibly peoples media tools in there.
- add much more on skills levels and kit levels required. BF and MT
- Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit did not work because it required NMIT 4.0 while in the toolkit only the NMIT 5 was provided - check we put the right version in
- add more tools for peoples media
- tools section and the how to section are to technical - work on language
- Modifications to individual tools
- add - Gizmo enabled the sending of voicemail messages to email which prove versatile tool for advocacy especially when the voice message recorded may be a report requiring wider circulation via email or a website.
- FrontlineSMS - The software challenge was in getting the drivers for a Nokia 6070 while the hardware challenge was in getting the appropriate CA-42 cable. The limitations of FrontlineSMS are the need to send only a few bulk text messages at a time
- The toolkit CD version on EpiSurveyor did not work and we obtained the latest version online.
- Frontline - change to "moderate" installation
- concerns about Frontline from WOUGNET - Among the things we didn’t like about it were:
1.It didn’t seem to handle large databases well and kept “hanging” mid-process while trying to send out messages. 2.It also was designed for old phones (apparently to keep setup cost down), however, the data-cables for such phones are not readily available. 3.It doesn’t work with modern/smart phones. 4.There is no clear functionality to automatically forward an incoming contribution from one participant in the database to the others. 5.No function to reply an SMS with a specific message only has a feature to reply with a generic, pre-determined message for all incoming SMS, for example “your message has been received”. You can’t reply to a question asked, except by starting a “new” message. 6.There is no copy and paste function, so to forward a message or to save it in an external format like an MSWord document, the user must re-type the text. 7.The original version we got on the CD, didn’t have a debug log file, so when the system failed, there was no way to know what went wrong. 8.The original software was designed to work with the “Regional and Language Options” settings on your PC or laptop set to UK English, otherwise the application won’t launch. We therefore had to change our laptop settings, which had US English as the default. 9.There were difficulties with finding hardware that was compatible with Frontline SMS. We eventually found a GRPS card that worked in initial testing, Frontline SMS didn’t perform as expected when working with a large database. Initial tests with a small database of 5 numbers worked, but it failed to send all messages when working with the full database of 100 numbers. BS to test against new version of Frontline
- Episurvayor needed the installation of JAVA run time environment (JRE) on which ever system one has to use before it could work and that goes for some of the tools.(add to description)
- focus on windows tools
- consider other tools - hipcast, galore, mobivox, wapple.net
- Services
- Bulk SMS - check the link with www.textnigeria.vsms.net
- check those services - There are some free SMS site largely used by Nigerians - they are free SMS at www.freemobilesms.com they use a tool known as GLOBE 7 version 8.0 , bulkmail at www.ebulk.tv
- think about the fact that the services required a credit card which might exclude many users
- The service 130FlashBack (free ‘please call me’ text messages) and Bonga Points (loyalty points) are examples of services that may be included in the toolkit.
[edit] Case Studies
- see if Sophia can go through all reviews and extricate case studies - may involve contacting people to ask for more info BF to check this out
- add Case Study on ushahidi.com in Kenya during the post election violence in January and February 2008.
- New case studies - Kindly include our BungeSMS campaign case study available on www.bungesms.com and www.madeinkenya.org/projects.php
- Clarify - Some case studies may fit in several scenarios. This point may need to be clarified to non-technical users so that they do not perceive case studies and scenarios as restrictive applications of specific tools.
- add reverse examples - examples of were the technology has been tried and not found to work well/inappropriate for the activity. This will help guide others that were thinking of using the tool for the same purpose.
- add WOUGNET case studies, which can be found on the website, under news/sms initiatives (http://www.wougnet.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=63&Itemid=104). - The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence was an international SMS campaign from 25/Nov – 10Dec 2007, with over 170 participants drawn from 13 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America. The campaign was used as a strategy to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women. - The Women’s Day campaign from 25/Feb – 14/Mar 2008 was lead by EASSI, a WOUGNET member organisation, with over 240 participants drawn from 20 countries in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness of the plight of the girl-child in Kenya during the post-election violence in the country.
- add The FOODNET project is a regional agricultural research and development network focussing on market-oriented research and sales of value added agricultural products. Among other activities the project distributes market prices for agricultural produce by SMS. A user sends an SMS with a particular commodity and gets back a reply of the price of the commodity in various markets around the country.
- add and rewrite case studies from the report by International Center for Accelerated Development (ICAD)
- add some case studies covering use of mobiles in health sector
- add case studies from Law Clinic
[edit] Other Issues
. Also step by step use of frontline sms,
- The use of imagery would have made the case studies better and easier to understand. Get some from Wainaina facebook profile!!! BF to write to ken and to jan chipchase re pictures
- Other things to include -
- include it somewhere- voice versus sms - The use of SMS instead of voice is used as a cost saving method if what you have to say can be covered in one or two SMS messages. It’s not common to have a sustained conversation via SMS especially during the week (without the discounted weekend or late night SMS rates). Because for example, a 2 minute conversation is cheaper than 6 SMS and yet more can be said in the voice exchange.
- write a section about power issues, batteries - other sources of power
